Used To and Past Perfect

Used to (Soler)

Usamos el verbo modal “used to” para indicar algo que ocurría o sucedía en el pasado de manera habitual. También, se utiliza para algo que antes era verdad pero ya no lo es. Como con los otros verbos modales, “used to” está seguido por la forma base del verbo (el infinitivo sin “to”).

Structure (Estructura)

1. Affirmative Sentences (Frases afirmativas)

Sujeto + “used to” + verbo…

Ejemplos:

- We used to go to the beach every summer when I was young.

(Cuando era joven solíamos ir a la playa cada verano.)

- He used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, but he quit last year.

(Solía fumar un paquete de cigarrillos al día, pero lo dejó el año pasado.)

-I  used to like mushrooms, but not anymore.

(Antes me gustaban los hongos, pero ya no.)

-There used to be a great restaurant here, but it closed a few years ago.

(Había un buen restaurante aquí, pero cerró hace unos años.)

- You used to work very hard. 

(Tú solías trabajar muy duro)

2. Negative Sentences (Frases negativas)

Sujeto + “didn’t” + “use to” + verbo…

Ejemplos:

- I didn’t use to like mushrooms, but now I do.

(Antes no me gustaban los hongos, pero ahora sí.)

- Food didn’t use to be so expensive.

(La comida no solía ser tan cara.)

- We didn’t use to go away on holiday very often when I was young.

(No solíamos ir de vacaciones a menudo cuando era joven.)

- I didn’t use to work full-time.

(No solía trabajar tiempo completo.)

- You didn't use to exercise every day.

(Tu no solías ejercitar todos los días)

3. Interrogative Sentences (Frases interrogativas)

Did + sujeto + “use to” + verbo…?

Ejemplos:

- Did you use to exercise every day?

(¿Solías tu ejercitar todos los días?)

- Did he use to live in USA?

(¿Solía el vivir en Estados Unidos?)

- Did they use to like rap music?

(¿Solían a ellos gustarles la música rap?)

- When did you use to exercise?

(¿Cuándo solías ejercitar?)

- Where did he use to live?

(¿Donde solía el vivir?)

Past Perfect

El pasado perfecto , lo usamos para acciones que ocurrieron antes de otra acción en el pasado.

1.- Affirmative sentences (oraciones afirmativas):

Sujeto + auxiliar “had” + pasado participio + complemento.

-I had visited my friend twice. (Yo había visitado a mi amigo dos veces)
-She had written her first novel. (Ella había escrito su primera novela)

-I had worked for my uncle. (Yo había trabajado para mi tío)

-She had finished her homework. (Ella había terminado su tarea)

2.- Negative sentences (oraciones negativas):

Sujeto + auxiliar “had not” (hadn’t) + pasado participio + complemento

-You had not heard the noise. (Yo no había escuchado el ruido)
-We hadn’t bought the bed. (Nosotros no habíamos comprado la cama)

-They had not worked (Ellos no habían trabajado)

-You had not worked (Usted no había trabajado)

-They had not gone (Ellos no habían ido)

3,- Questions and short answers (preguntas y respuestas cortas):

Auxiliar “had” + sujeto + pasado participio + complemento?

-Had you turned the lights off? (¿Habías apagado las luces?)
-Had he returned my car at last? (¿El había regresado mi automóvil al fin?)
-Had it rained for the last month? (¿Había llovido durante el último mes?)
-Had you worked in that firm for many years? (¿Tú habías trabajado en esa empresa por muchos años?)
-Had we loved each other for twenty years? (¿Nosotros nos habíamos amado uno al otro por veinte años?)
